I just used LJ's own archive download, which took about 15 minutes to download 4 years, so not too bad. I'm on a Mac, so would also appreciate any advice. autopope commented on a program called Python, but I couldn't get it to work properly...

Thanks for another vote on ljarchive. I definitely don't want to leave either, but having backups is never a bad idea.
