Weekend roundup
Saturday I went with
jpsorrow and
jennifer_dunne to see Eagle Eye. We enjoyed the movie but all agreed that
as the script was originally written, Jerry was supposed to have died at the end, and the final memorial service would have been for both brothers, not one. I'm of the opinion that an alternate ending was likely filmed, and may show up as a DVD extra.
Jerry's survival was the one false note of the movie--in part because these characters weren't Bruce Willis Energizer Bunny type heroes--when people were hurt, there were consequences, and they didn't magically get back up. If a Bruce-like character had been the hero, then his survival would have made sense for the story arc. But the story arc was weakened by Jerry making the decision to sacrifice himself, and then improbably surviving a hail of Secret Service bullets.
Another nitpick on the final scene was when they acknowledged those who died, only Jerry's brother and the FBI agent were pictured. In Jerry's initial escape and subsequent car chase, the toll of dead or critically injured police and bystanders must have been in the dozens, but these deaths were discounted. Yeah, I know, I'm nitpicking realism on an action adventure flick. But that's what happens when three storytellers walk into a movie theater.
In other weekend news, the Barnes & Noble website has a new (new to me, anyway) feature that allows you to check stock at your local store. While checking the price of a DVD set on their website, I saw a button that said check local stock. Much to my surprise, the DVDs, a box set of the British mystery series DNA, was apparently in stock at the Vestal store. So, after steeling myself to a rather unpleasant task that I'd been avoiding all week, I then rewarded myself with a trip to B&N, where indeed the set was in stock.
I also checked on several book titles as a test run, and the website reports were accurate as far as what I did and did not find on the shelves. Results are probably not as good for rapidly selling titles, or if stock is down to just one or two copies, but it's an interesting feature.

But I haven't seen this. I saw Crystal Skull, which I thought he did all right in. I mean, the whole movie was camp, so his acting style wasn't brought to the forefront so much. Lead-Lined Refrigerator, people:-)!
Looking forward now to albacon.
