You're right, gamers face very similar challenges in creating unique names that fit the culture/era of the game.

Anything can be grist for the mill, and if I see a cool name, I'll add it to the list of potentials. You can always tell those who have experience, since they know to stay away from the obvious traps like Frodo, Voldemort, or Kal-El.
