Do you outline? Different process for different people, but I've heard rumors of folks who manage amounts in the 8-10,000 range in one day, due to heavy pre-writing.
My current outline is a bullet list of scenes that need to be written, with a one sentence description of each scene. I've used more detailed outlines in the past, but for this project it's pretty basic.
As you suggested, I think there has to be pre-writing to achieve this pace, whether it's done on paper or in my head. That's why I often take a break between writing scenes to do something else (something frivolous like showering, eating or getting groceries). While I'm away from my computer my subconscious is thinking about the story, so by the time I sit back down I'll have much of the scene mapped out in my head.
